A re-theme at the Porirua Aquatic Cen­tre started this week that will in­clude a fresh coat of paint through­out, mod­ern new glass-re­in­forced stairs with a funky, par­tially translu­cent tun­nel lead­ing to the hy­dro slide, a new roof in the steam room, im­proved en­ergy-ef cient light­ing over the leisure pool and new re­vamped pool­side lock­ers. New pool cov­ers for the lane pool that will roll away each day un­der built in seat­ing is also be­ing added to save en­ergy costs by re­duc­ing heat loss at night.

The en­trance to the Arena and pool will also have a facelift, with the in­stal­la­tion of new slip-re­sis­tant oor­ing and added dec­o­ra­tive fea­tures. Along with the re­fresh, a lot of main­te­nance work will be car­ried out be­hind the scenes in the plant room. To stop the re­cent wa­ter loss to the lane pool, new wa­ter feeder pipes will be xed at a low level along three sides of the pool. The pool is ex­pected to re­open on Fri­day 16 Au­gust.
