Youth awards open

Ap­pli­ca­tions are open for the Porirua Youth Awards, founded in 2010 by Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Hekia Parata.

The four cat­e­gories are arts/cul­ture, en­vi­ron­ment/ com­mu­nity, sports and ed­u­ca­tion – with up to eight awards, worth up to $1500, granted an­nu­ally. Ap­pli­cants must be aged from 12 to 19.

Ms Parata said the awards were a fo­rum to cel­e­brate tal­ented Porirua youths and give them an op­por­tu­nity to de­velop po­ten­tial.

Last year 11 young peo­ple were recog­nised. Each re­ceived $1000 to go to­wards de­vel­op­ment in their cho­sen dis­ci­pline. Ap­pli­ca­tions are avail­able at poriru­afoun­da­tion. Forms need to be in by Au­gust 9. Win­ners will be an­nounced on Septem­ber 12.
