Norths tidy up unfinished business
Northern United women’s rugby captain Moana Aiatu said her team waited a year to atone for their loss to Wainuiomata in last year’s Wellington premier club final.
Aiatu and the rest of her Norths team were celebrating on Friday night after they held off a spirited Oriental-Rongotai side 18-5 at Porirua Park in this year’s final.
‘‘We really wanted this after last year. Now we can go and celebrate all our hard work,’’ she said.
Norths, unbeaten throughout 2013, led 13-0 at halftime. They dominated possession and territory, but only a try right on halftime by flying left winger Donna Fermanis earned them a comfortable buffer at the break.
For Norths, Lekah Leti, Fermanis and Sharna Burt scored tries. Aggie Faraimo kicked a penalty. Ories’ only reply was a try in the 63rd minute to Joanah Ngan-Woo.
Aiatu paid tribute to coaches Aimee Sutorius and Matt Poutoa and to the club supporters – the final was watched by 1500 spectators.
Norths swept the Fleurs Trophy (first round) and Victoria Tavern Trophy (second round) double in 2013.
