Why Burke is having another go

Former Porirua mayor John Burke made the decision to stand for council again at the last minute, he said.

Mr Burke was defeated by Jenny Brash for the mayoralty in 1998, after serving five terms. He said his decision to try for a council seat in the Eastern ward was made very late.

‘‘It’s only been in the last few weeks that people have said to me that my experience might be valuable,’’ he said. ‘‘I have all the time in the world and I know the aspirations of the people in Porirua East. I made a decision just days ago [ before the cutoff last Friday].’’

Mr Burke said the political landscape will be different by 2016, and he wants to be a part of Porirua’s transition. He realised there was a logjam in the Eastern ward, with 14 people standing for four seats, but was ‘‘quite happy for it to be the will of the people’’ should he be re-elected.
