Man convicted of assault
A Cannons Creek man faces five years in prison after bashing a stranger who insulted his sister.
Unemployed 22-year-old Roy Rotanny Tanapa was in Cannons Creek Park at 1am on July 7 with his sister and partner.
A man unknown to the group passed by and made a comment about Tanapa’s sister.
Tanapa chased the man across Warspite Ave to the Cannons Creek shops. He punched the man in the head and face five times, and when the man fell to the ground, kicked and hit him.
The man suffered a dislocated shoulder and a fractured eye socket.
When found by police that same night, Tanapa could only explain that he was angry about the comment, police prosecutor Lucette Kuhn said at Porirua District Court last Tuesday.
Tanapa’s lawyer, Sonia Thistoll, acknowledged he was facing time in jail for the attack, although she asked Judge Jan Kelly to consider home detention. He was drunk when he attacked the stranger, she said.
Tanapa was convicted of assault and released on bail. He will be sentenced on September 10.
