I don’t normally find myself in agreement with a supermarket operator, but Tony McNeil of Porirua New World (August 13) is correct to point out that when prices are compared that items on special should not be included in price comparisons. That can distort the picture quite a lot.
However, I disagree with him that Four Square stores should not be included – most of them now are supermarket size and items that sell in those places are also found in a supermarket like New World.
They can give the supermarkets a good run for their money when goods that aren’t on special are compared.
However, price comparisons don’t mean anything to me.
Sure it is cheaper to shop at Pak’nSave, but the savings that I would make when shopping there would be negated by the cost of getting there and back.
If I shop at my local Four Square I don’t pay for transport because I can just walk there.
