Cheap shop­ping

I don’t nor­mally find my­self in agree­ment with a su­per­mar­ket op­er­a­tor, but Tony McNeil of Porirua New World (Au­gust 13) is cor­rect to point out that when prices are com­pared that items on spe­cial should not be in­cluded in price com­par­isons. That can dis­tort the pic­ture quite a lot.

How­ever, I dis­agree with him that Four Square stores should not be in­cluded – most of them now are su­per­mar­ket size and items that sell in those places are also found in a su­per­mar­ket like New World.

They can give the supermarkets a good run for their money when goods that aren’t on spe­cial are com­pared.

How­ever, price com­par­isons don’t mean any­thing to me.

Sure it is cheaper to shop at Pak’nSave, but the sav­ings that I would make when shop­ping there would be negated by the cost of get­ting there and back.

If I shop at my lo­cal Four Square I don’t pay for trans­port be­cause I can just walk there.
