New World plans uncertain
A long-awaited $14 million New World supermarket in Whitby may not be going ahead, KapiMana News has learned.
Plans to build a New World in Adventure Park, opposite the present New World in Whitby Mall, have been put on hold along with all Foodstuffs’ North Island projects.
Countdown has bought a large section of land in Aotea and it is not yet clear whether that influenced Foodstuffs’ decision.
Asked about the proposed Whitby New World, Foodstuffs group communication manager Katherine Klouwens said: ‘‘Foodstuffs owns a site across the road from the existing store, but we have no announcements regarding this site at the current time.’’
It is a far cry from earlier news that the new New World would be three times the size of the existing Whitby store.
The Countdown land is the Aotea Camping Grounds in Whitford Brown Ave.
It is unclear whether another Countdown store is to be built so close to the company’s Porirua and Tawa stores.
A spokeswoman for the Countdown chain said: ‘‘We can confirm that we have purchased a site in Aotea.
‘‘ It’s very early days. We’re happy to update you further as we move forward.’’
