Tawa foodbank scores top award
Tawa ‘‘foodbank with a difference’’ Kiwi Community Assistance was crowned top charity in the Porirua basin at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards last Monday.
It also won first in the health and wellbeing category, each award coming with $1000 prize money. Kiwi Community Assistance will also be a finalist in the Wellington regional awards in October.
Founder Tracy Wellington said the win was unexpected.
‘‘ I didn’t even have a speech ready.’’
The awards were a tribute to the charity’s dozens of volunteers, who collect and distribute food, clothing and household goods to struggling families in Porirua and Tawa, Ms Wellington said.
Top of Ms Wellington’s mind last week was not the award, but the need to find warehouse space for the hundreds of boxes of goods pouring in each week.
