Transmission Gully gets green light
Construction of the Transmission Gully motorway will begin in the second half of next year, and the aim is for it to be open to traffic in 2020.
Prime Minister John Key confirmed last Tuesday that work on the $2.5 billion northern corridor road from Levin to Wellington Airport would begin in 2014.
It was estimated the motorway would shave about 40 minutes from morning peak travel time from Levin to Wellington, Mr Key said.
The project has encountered opposition from locals, and others say the money should be spent on upgrading a rail link.
The route also lies on a faultline.
