Rodders boost for Ruby

Porirua- based Western Bays Street Rodders have raised more than $10,000 for a Pukerua Bay family after a mystery run on Sunday.

More than 65 vehicles took part in the Ruby Penney charity run, raising money for Pukerua Bay resident Ruby Penney.

Ruby was 7 when she contracted Lyme disease through a tick bite while on holiday in Australia.

The disease can cause a vast range of symptoms, and can mimic diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases. It can be fatal.

Club president Eric van Diggele said the club raised more than $10,000 throughout the year from club events.

This was boosted by Sunday’s raffle, auction, and mystery run, which the Penneys took part in.

The auction raised $6600 with many items donated by Johnson- ville Repco branch manager Alex Newson, Mr van Diggele said.

Western Bays Street Rodders also donated $500 to the family, he said.

‘‘Everyone went home happy, especially the Penneys.’’
