Wishing Tree appeal kicks off
Christmas is a hard time for many Porirua families, so Kmart Porirua and the Salvation Army are stepping in by holding the annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal.
The 2013 appeal – the 19th of its kind – was launched at Kmart Porirua on Wednesday.
The first presents were placed under the tree by Pauatahanui School pupils Ollie and Bella Robinson, assisted by Porirua mayor Nick Leggett and Labour MP Kris Faafoi.
Ollie, 10, collected 200 Christmas presents for disadvantaged children in Porirua last year.
This year he is encouraging his school and other Porirua schools to take part.
Porirua residents are invited to place new gifts, preferably wrapped, under the tree in Kmart Porirua.
Tags are supplied to specify the ideal gender and age of the child who will receive the gift.
From mid-December the presents will be distributed around Porirua by the Salvation Army.
