Her own home was in­vaded by bur­glars, and she was us­ing al­co­hol and drugs to deal with trau­matic events in her past, he said.

‘‘Th­ese have come to a head in the last few years with drug abuse and, essen­tially, her self­med­i­cat­ing.’’

Be­ing re­manded in jail since Septem­ber 20 had forced Brown to dry out and she was in a good space, with more bal­anced moods and a clear com­plex­ion, Mr More said.

She had started tak­ing an­tide­pres­sants and had tack­led some of her prob­lems for the first time, he said.
