Adieu to stalwarts

Plimmerton identities John and Helen Chipper have left the building.

The couple, owners of the Moana Lodge, have moved to Auckland to be closer to family. They had a farewell last week at the Pavilion.

Mrs Chipper said they wanted to make their exit with a minimum of fuss and they were not keen to be interviewed.

The Chippers were active members of the Plimmerton community.

Porirua City councillor Tim Sheppard described Helen as a ‘‘founding mother’’ of the council’s village programme. She was also involved in a campaign to stop heavily-laden trucks from a nearby quarry from rumbling through the suburb.

Moana Lodge, which is a his- toric building, won industry awards and featured in The Lonely Planet as one of the top backpackers in the region.

Plimmerton Residents’ Association chairman Colin Bleasdale said the Chippers’ farewell was a chance to reflect on the ‘‘valuable’’ input they had made.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett noted the Chippers’ ‘‘superb service to Porirua over the years’’ at a council meeting last week.
