Shoplifter’s ‘dumb decision’

Kapi-Mana News - - COURT -

A single Porirua East mother wants to set a better example for her young children after shoplifting three times this year.

Kelly Tira Ehetera Arai, 23, was convicted of three counts of shoplifting last Tuesday at Porirua District Court and will be sentenced on January 14.

Arai drove with three girlfriends to Coastlands Mall in Paraparaumu on October 20, police prosecutor Kevin Shaw said.

She stole clothes worth $377.71 from Postie Plus, shoes worth $94.95 from Number One Shoes, and games worth $179.96 from Toy World.

Staff at Toy World saw Arai taking the games and called the police, Mr Shaw said. All the stolen goods were found in the boot of Arai’s car.

Arai’s lawyer, Kerrin Eckersley, said her client was remorseful and wanted to change for her family.

‘‘It was a dumb decision and she certainly wants to set a better example for her children.’’

Judge Tom Broadmore said his sentencing would be influenced by Arai’s previous two shoplifting convictions this year.

Arai might also be disqualified from driving, Judge Broadmore said.
