Why the haka is so good

I write in re­sponse to Joseph Ro­manos’ opin­ion on the haka (Sport­stalk, Novem­ber 26).

The haka is for three or four min­utes tops, and is fol­lowed by an 80-minute game of Swing Low, Sweet Char­iot, Waltz­ing Matilda and other ‘‘na­tional’’ songs.

Do we com­plain? No, we go out and play 80 min­utes of en­ter­tain­ing rugby.

To those sports fans who wish to have the All Blacks drop the haka: if there is no haka, there is no All Blacks, and no All Blacks would mean a third-rate world com­pe­ti­tion.

We do not dom­i­nate world rugby just by do­ing the haka. We dom­i­nate it be­cause we’re good at rugby.
