Water quality provokes stream warning

Kapi-Mana News - - NEWS -

Parents are advised to keep children away from the northern reaches of Plimmerton Beach by Taupo Stream.

Water quality warnings have been placed at the stream outlet because high coliform counts make the area unsafe.

Jenny Brash from Greater Wellington Regional Council said investigations were ongoing to locate and fix the source of the pollution.

‘‘Many of our streams go through built-up areas and swamps on their way to our beaches. These can become polluted on their way by farm animals, birds, stormwater and other waste,’’ Ms Brash said.

The regional council and Porirua City Council monitor streams and beach outlets regularly and information about water quality is on both councils’ websites.

Take care when swimming at beaches, particularly two to three days after rain. Keep children away from stream outlets, which are likely to be polluted.

Plimmerton Residents’ Association has invited council specialists to a meeting in early 2014 to ensure the situation is being resolved.
