Judges applaud park’s community engagement
Waitangirua Community Park has been recognised with the Outstanding Project Award at the 2013 New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) Awards held in November in Rotorua. The community of Waitangirua worked with the Council’s Village Planning Programme and consultants from Corydon Consultants and Treadwell Associates to turn a barren, underused car park into a thriving community hub and play area. The park opened in December 2010 and has become a wellused, much-loved community space, featuring junior and senior areas, sports courts, tness circuits, a BBQ, a performance stage and public art. Thanks go to the community of Waitangirua who were involved in the project from the early design phase right through to construction.
