Cannons Creek shops upgrade

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

What an excellent suggestion for the Cannons Creek shops, by Miles Lacey (January 21).

The shop buildings (not the retailers!) were already very worn in the 1970s, and 40 years later they are so old and dilapidated they should be pulled down and totally redeveloped.

Just take a look round the back of them – absolutely ramshackle.

It’s not 10 years since the last big attempt to sort out the Warspite and Mungavin parking and get the new toilets built, and since then lighting has been improved and rubbishy spots cleaned up – but the shop buildings themselves are the problem. Their dinginess reemerges after every local effort to brighten up the scene.

A mall-type market of shops and stalls with properly placed parking would be great.

Would some rich developer please come forward to do this and make his pile from the higher shop rents, the resulting increased prices, the uncertain bookings for stalls, the increasing customers from Aotea, Whitby, and points north? Yeah, right.

I’m sure our ward councillors, and the Residents and Ratepayers Association would be glad to know of any practical steps which could result in such a fine vision as Miles Lacey’s.
