Cancer relay plans set
Registrations for Relay for Life in Porirua are open.
The Cancer Society’s first Relay for Life was held in Palmerston North in 2001 and they are now held throughout the country.
In Porirua, Relay for Life will be held at Te Rauparaha Park, on Saturday, March 15, from 4pm until 9am the following day.
‘‘Relay for Life is an opportunity for people to come together in a positive event that will raise awareness and funds to support the work of Cancer Society,’’ said event organiser Tracy Johnson.
‘‘Team members can walk and jog through the night, symbolising the fact that cancer never sleeps. However, people taking part come and go as they like.’’
Relay for Life will begin with an opening ceremony, in which cancer survivors and caregivers lead the first lap of the event.
Then team members take to the track – most walk, but some prefer to jog.
A Candlelight Ceremony will be held later in the evening to remember loved ones, and personally inscribed candle bags are placed around the track, their light shedding a glow over proceedings.
In the morning, teams come together for a closing ceremony.
Entry costs $20 per person or $200 per team and anyone can take part. Register by email to relayforlife@ cancersoc. org. nz or phone 237 8238.
