Shopping spree ends up in court

Kapi-Mana News - - COURT -

A Wellington woman attempted, and failed, to steal items from two Porirua stores in the same afternoon.

Pania Ruth Royal, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft in Porirua District Court last Tuesday.

Police prosecutor Mike Craig said that on February 1, at 2.30pm, Royal attempted to steal $37 of meat products from New World Porirua.

‘‘She was seen by staff putting meat in her handbag,’’ he said.

‘‘She said she didn’t have any money to pay.’’

Two hours later Royal was caught trying to steal cosmetics from The Warehouse Porirua.

Mr Craig said she removed tags from items before putting them in her handbag.

She then walked around the store before she changed her mind and put a few things back.

Mr Craig said security approached her and removed $103 worth of items from Royal’s handbag.

Peter Foster, the lawyer for the defence, said Royal was apologetic about her actions.

‘‘She was having a difficult time and trying to provide for her children,’’ he said.

Judge Walker convicted and remanded Royal to appear on March 3 in Wellington District Court, where she has other charges pending.
