Regional fund rethink

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

The mystery of the four Porirua beauties has been partially solved.

Our story last week and our Facebook inquiry have drawn numerous phone calls and a couple of visits to our offices.

We were able to identify three of the beauty pageant winners as, from left, Amanda Mulholland, Melise Bovis and Janine Holcroft. The girl on the right remains a mystery.

The photo is from the Miss Porirua Shopping Centre contest in 1977.

Ms Holcroft, 42, said she was very surprised when her uncle called to say he had seen her picture in Kapi-Mana News.

She said her grandmother entered both her and her baby brother in the contest.

Ms Holcroft was only 5 at the time, but can remember one very important fact about the day: she was wearing Womble socks.

She finished runner- up and was awarded with a little leather mouse.

Ms Holcroft said she still had the mouse in 2005, but was not sure where it was now.

The school librarian said she did not go on to participate in any other beauty pageants, but her family still talked about it sometimes. ‘‘ It’s one of those things we laugh about,’’ she said. Porirua City Council may join the Regional Amenities Fund after all.

In 2012, the council opted to not join the fund, which supports arts, cultural and recreation facilities such as Te Papa, Wellington Zoo, Circa Theatre and Orchestra Wellington.

A fund of $2 million was proposed, with Porirua ratepayers asked to contribute $144,000.

At last week’s Te Komiti meeting, councillors resolved unanimously to allow provision for $144,000 — rising to $ 198,000 by 2017/ 18 — in the upcoming annual plan.

Te Komiti chairman Euon Murrell said it was a recommendation only and there would be discussion and consultation to come. Mayor Nick Leggett said it was a significant amount it had turned down two years ago, ‘‘but the flavour of the world is regional and we have to consider it’’.

Councillor Ken Douglas said there needed to be a rigorous examination of the policy and its benefits to Porirua. His colleague Litea Ah Hoi said she was unlikely to support it.
