Tawa ar­son in­ves­ti­gated

Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing an ar­son to the Fletcher Con­struc­tion Yard in Takapu Road, Tawa.

The fire was re­ported by mem­bers of the pub­lic at about 11pm on Thurs­day, Fe­bru­ary 13.

The cost of the dam­age is ex­pected to be in ex­cess of $1 mil­lion.

At about 5am the fol­low­ing morn­ing a 54-yearold Lower Hutt man was ar­rested for an ar­son­re­lated of­fence that is al­leged to have hap­pened in cen­tral Welling­ton at about 10pm the pre­vi­ous night.

Given that both of­fences hap­pened within an hour, po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing any pos­si­ble link.

Po­lice are in­ter­ested in talk­ing to any­one who saw sus­pi­cious ac­tiv­ity in the Takapu Road area that Thurs­day night.

They would also like to talk to any­one who was work­ing in a ser­vice sta­tion or shop be­tween 10pm and 11pm that Thurs­day who sold any sol­vent or petrol in a can.
