Back in the day when gym­nas­tics was men­tioned, an in­stant im­age of a box, a wooden beat­board and a very flat hard mat to land on, came to mind. These days when gym­nas­tics is men­tioned, an im­age of colourful equip­ment, balls, tram­po­lines, rib­bons and lots of other ex­cit­ing things bounce to mind. Porirua Gym­nas­tics Club is a fully- equipped gym­nas­tics cen­tre with all the gear to stim­u­late and en­cour­age chil­dren to move. The staff be­lieve all chil­dren should have the op­por­tu­nity to learn about move­ment skills that we need for ev­ery­day life. Its coaches teach the fun­da­men­tal move­ment pat­terns. These are static, ma­nip­u­la­tive, ro­ta­tion, lo­co­mo­tion, spring, land­ing and swing. Fun­da­men­tal move­ment pat­terns are needed to stand still, bal­ance, roll, run, catch a ball, climb trees and hold a pen­cil. These are only a few of the ac­tiv­i­ties our chil­dren en­joy do­ing in their life. Porirua Gym­nas­tics Club of­fers classes for preschool­ers, school-aged chil­dren and adults to de­velop and im­prove at move­ment us­ing gym­nas­tics. The move­ment pat­terns the club teaches help chil­dren to be self- con­fi­dent and phys­i­cally in­de­pen­dent.
