Council to press on

Porirua City Council has decided to go ahead with developing its own policy to deal with synthetic drugs, despite the Government’s decision to ban them.

The council voted last month to develop a policy about where legal highs could be sold. Since then, the Government has decided to push through a law banning their sale until they have been proven safe.

Mayor Nick Leggett said he was very happy with the law change, but the council needed a policy to protect Porirua.

‘‘ In the short term, it’s exactly what the country has been calling for. It concerns me it’s not a permanent fix,’’ he said.

Leggett said the law gave the council more time to develop its policy, which was planned to be finished by Christmas.
