May­oral snub em­bar­rass­ing

I write with ref­er­ence to the front page ar­ti­cle of Kapi-Mana News (April 22). Mayor Nick Leggett is cor­rect in feel­ing em­bar­rassed on be­half of Porirua City that he, as mayor, was not in­vited to the visit to the Royal New Zealand Po­lice Col­lege by the Duke and Duchess of Cam­bridge. I do not be­lieve that mayor Leggett was tout­ing to be in­vited for his own ego.

He was shocked, and had ev­ery right to be, that ap­pro­pri­ate pro­to­cols were not shown to the of­fice of mayor of the city.

He was in my view de­lib­er­ately and in­ap­pro­pri­ately ex­cluded.

Ap­pro­pri­ate pro­to­cols for such a visit to any town or city call for the se­nior rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the city, in this case mayor Leggett, to be present to re­ceive the guests on be­half of the city.

How is it that this oc­curred in ev­ery other in­stance around New Zealand dur­ing the royal cou­ple’s visit, but did not hap­pen here in Porirua? That this did not oc­cur shows a com­plete lack of judg­ment and ap­pre­ci­a­tion of the usual cour­te­sies and pro­to­cols when or­gan­is­ing such a visit.

I would have ex­pected bet­ter from the Po­lice Col­lege visit or­gan­is­ers and would hope by now they have en­sured mayor Leggett has re­ceived an apol­ogy for the
