A wealth of ideas to “Reclaim the Canopies” in Porirua’s CBD were generated during a workshop led by place-making guru David Engwicht and attended by about 80 people. During the day, attendees were encouraged to see the Canopies area as an asset that could be enhanced. Ideas included everything from giving the area a circus theme with coloured lights and trapezes, to creating a forest-like canopy hung with vines. Another idea was a painted stream, complete with bridges that could meander through the canopies and connect with the streamside quarter.

Volunteer project leaders have been given until the end of June to develop a plan for submission to the Council. The 13 project leaders will take an active role in planning, organising and driving a three-day makeover of the canopies at the end of winter. Mr Engwicht will oversee the project from Australia and then return for the three-day makeover.
