A new initiative to clean up a long-standing dump site is under way in Porirua.

Leanne Myers and James Michael, directors of Takecare, a composting business in Titahi Bay, are leading a project to clear away piles of rubbish from an area near Porirua hospital.

Commercial property firm Colliers International is funding the project.

‘‘The site has been used as a dumping ground by the public for many, many years,’’ said Myers.

‘‘This is a problem in Porirua, all this dumping that happens around different areas. So we want to start a campaign and really get the message across about respecting our Earth.’’

Once the rubbish has been cleared, Myers and Michael plan to build a pathway with seating for the community to use.
