New names join Hur­ri­canes for a day

Fu­ture star: Leo Mitchell, 6, of Ti­tahi Bay with Hur­ri­cane and All Black Con­rad Smith and the named jersey Smith wore dur­ing a re­cent Su­per Rugby game.

Leo and his fam­ily stayed in Ron­ald McDon­ald House while he was kept in isolation with a gas­tric virus com­pli­cated by type- 1 di­a­betes.

His jersey was bought on TradeMe to be do­nated to him by New Zealand Wire­less. N

am­ing rights to jer­seys for the en­tire squad were up for grabs and each car­ried the name of a child where the BNZ logo would nor­mally be.

Hur­ri­canes fans made bids or en­tered a bal­lot for the jersey- nam­ing rights and three were auc­tioned on TradeMe. The ini­tia­tive raised $12,000 for Plun­ket over the five New Zealand Su­per 15 fran­chises.
