New curtains warm home

Matalaga Letele’s smile will hopefully be accompanied by a warm winter, now that new curtains have been put up in her home.

The Cannons Creek resident was given new curtains by the Curtain Bank, as part of a programme run by the Sustainability Trust to give free curtains to people in the Porirua community.

Letele said she was already feeling the difference. ‘‘With our other curtains, when you closed them, the light still came through. But these curtains block it out well,’’ she said.

With winter having set in, new curtains will help fend off the cold – a problem faced by many Porirua houses that are often under-insulated.

‘‘ Houses in Porirua can be really cold and draughty,’’ said Curtain Bank co- ordinator Erika Grant. ‘‘Once households have curtains in their family living room they’ll notice the temperature difference straight away.’’

‘‘Good quality curtains really help to keep the heat in and the power bills down.’’

This is the third year the Curtain Bank has been to Porirua. All Community Services Card members are invited to apply for free curtains at the Whanau Centre in Cannons Creek.
