The idea that watercolours are pale and dull is outdated and wrong, says Watercolour New Zealand.

The organisation is challenging that assumption with an exhibition of paintings at Pataka that runs until June 15.

It features works by many of New Zealand’s leading watercolourists, including Kapiti artists Wendy Masters, Vivian Manthel- French, Mary- Annette Hay, George Thompson, Daniel Reeve, Peter Augustin, Claire Clark and Margaret Brown.

On weekends, members will demonstrate the art of watercolour painting in the museum’s Bottle Creek Gallery.

Colourful, not pale: Bridges on a Venetian Canal by George Thompson.

Bright, not dull: Gullfight by Daniel Reeve.
