Paremata hairdresser Jamie Thorne blew judges away with her high fashion blow-wave.

The Hair by the Sea apprentice brushed her way to success at the Robert Lahman Apprentice Challenge last month.

Thorne placed third in the Current Fashion Salon Blow Wave section.

She said the win was a big surprise.

‘‘I didn’t think I’d get anything. It’s given me a lot more confidence to do more competitions,’’ she said.

Owner Tracy Jones said she knew Thorne would do well in the competition. ‘‘I was very proud.’’ Thorne, 22, has worked at Hair by the Sea for 18 months.

Before that she completed a hairdressing course at Whitireia Polytechnic.

She was inspired to go into hairdressing after seeing her older step-sister do it.

‘‘This is really my thing now. I love it.’’

Thorne said her winning blow- wave was not the sort you would walk down the street with as it was more high fashion and avant garde.

She will compete in the Wellington regional competition in August.

Big win, right hair: Hair By the Sea apprentice Jamie Thorne practises her blow-wave on owner Tracy Jones.
