Sis­ter cities cel­e­brate

Two pou were re­vealed in Porirua’s Aus­tralian sis­ter city last month to cel­e­brate 30 years of part­ner­ship.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett, Whi­tireia dancers and mem­bers of Ngati Toa trav­elled to Black- town, near Syd­ney, to re­veal the Maori cer­e­mo­nial gate­way in the New Zealand Gar­den at Nur­rag­ingy Re­serve.

The gate­way fea­tures two 4-me­tre high totem poles (pou) carved by Ngati Toa carvers and broth­ers Her­mann and Tana Salz­mann.

A cer­e­mo­nial ded­i­ca­tion of the pou took place dur­ing the Black­town Fes­ti­val week in May.

The sis­ter city agree­ment was signed on May 5, 1984.
