Big plans for Matariki
Matariki stars are shining brightly across Porirua as the festival lights up.
One of the events planned is a Matariki exhibition at Michael Bennington’s Emerging Light Gallery.
Art students from Whitireia mounted Te Whanau Marama, The Family of Light exhibition last week.
Pukerua Bay, St Theresa’s and Plimmerton schools will also be mounting displays at the gallery this week.
The art work will be auctioned to raise funds for the Ruby Red Trust, supporting a local student suffering from Lyme disease.
About 2500 Porirua schoolchildren will be actively involved in Matariki activities this year.
On June 28, Te Rauparaha Arena will host the final 2014 Matariki event, the Kapo Kapo Matariki Craft Market. Activities will include Matariki-themed kite and lantern making and performances by schoolchildren.
To top it off, Po Whakaatu, the Art of The Night free bus tour will run on July 3, 5pm till 10pm, to take people to events and local exhibitions.
The bus will then continue to the Dowse Art Museum, Te Papa and the City Gallery in Wellington. All Matariki events are free.
