Focus goes on better drivers

Partners Porirua is trying to improve driving by increasing opportunities for safe driver education and driving practice.

It has joined forces with sponsors Caltex, NZ Transport Agency and the Automobile Association to connect teenagers who would otherwise not have the opportunity to learn to drive with mentors from the community.

At a recent celebration to mark the graduation of 15 students from the second Community Driver Mentor Programme, mentor Denys Latham said he felt the project was working.

‘‘This is my second time around as a driving mentor,’’ he said. ‘‘I can unequivocally say it makes a difference. The driver becomes better informed and better skilled on the road.’’
