Why council staff are smiling

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

I am not surprised that Gary Simpson and his team are smiling (June 17). I would too for that amount of money.

If the Porirua City Council has that much money to play with, surely as a responsible employer it should be looking at improving the wages of the staff earning below a living wage.

This is not just people new to the workforce in a menial role. It’s staff with responsibilities, who do good work for years as the helpful face of the council, while knowing they will never be allowed to reach the level of a living wage.

Gary Simpson and his team should ask for the photo to be replaced with one where they hang their heads in shame, but I suppose the one of them grinning is at least honest.
