Porirua City Aquatics won the inaugural Swimming Wellington junior MetroLeague last week, heading off the region’s larger swimming clubs.

A total of 265 swimmers competed in the finals, at the Coastlands Aquatic Centre.

There were 10 teams of at least 16 swimmers aged 12 and under from Wanganui, Wairarapa, Wellington, the Kapiti Coast and the Hutt Valley.

The A final was close, with Capital Swimming leading by just three points at the halfway stage, before Porirua City Aquatics grabbed a onepoint lead at the threequarter mark.

Porirua coach Andy Wilkinson said after that his young team started to win more races.

‘‘They started to believe in themselves – they believed that they could win this,’’ he said.

A highlight among the 15 relays was the Canon relay. One boy and one girl from each of the age groups represented their teams, each swimming 25 metres.

Porirua won that event too, and won the A final by 20 points. Wilkinson was elated.

‘‘I was just over the moon – so proud of the kids. They put in a great effort.’’
