Aotea Countdown hopes to get approval soon

An application to build a new Countdown supermarket in Porirua is expected to be heard by a panel of Porirua City councillors in September.

Progressive Enterprises applied earlier this year for a private plan change to clear the way for development of a $17 million supermarket at 3 Whitford Brown Ave in Aotea.

This was put out for public consultation, and about 50 submissions were received by the deadline of June 13, said council senior policy analyst Peter Matich.

These were being analysed and a summary would be put out for further submissions closing midJuly.

A report would then be done for a hearings panel which was likely to meet in September.

Matich said the site earmarked for the proposed 300 square metre supermarket is currently occupied by the Aotea Camp Ground. The land was zoned suburban and the council had to decide whether to approve the plan change.

The council’s decision was subject to appeal, which could cause a substantial delay.

Matich believed the most optimistic outcome, from Progressive’s point of view, would result in the plan change being approved by the end of the year.
