Council’s $8200 Wairarapa retreat

A recent retreat to Wairarapa for Porirua City councillors and senior council staff to discuss the council’s Long Term Plan cost $8200.

The two-day planning trip to Solway involved 17 people.

Costs were covered for accommodation, food, use of meeting facilities and a facilitator.

The council’s Long Term Plan outlines priorities and budgets for the coming 10 years and was among the most significant work the council did, mayor Nick Leggett said.

The council used to have a retreat at the beginning and in the middle of the term.

But Leggett said because many councillors were re-elected, the first one was canned this time.

‘‘ We used this [ Wairarapa retreat] to get the foundation laid for the long- term plan and it builds that team development between staff and councillors,’’ he said.

‘‘It gives us the space away to think about high-level priorities for the council as a group.’’

Leggett said using the council chambers in Porirua or a local conference facility like Gear Homestead was not considered.

‘‘We want to keep people there [in Solway]. What we find, if we do this locally, is that people invariably find excuses to go away during the day or come in later.’’

Long Term Plan workshops for councillors and council staff, will be held before Christmas.
