He took some time off to get married, but don’t expect Porirua’s mayor to sail off on honeymoon right away.

Nick Leggett married Emily Pita at St Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Plimmerton on Friday afternoon. The church was filled to bursting with guests.

The couple and close family and friends then enjoyed a reception at Ruth Pretty Catering in Te Horo.

Leggett said it was a fantastic day, free of any drama.

‘‘It was everything we wanted it to be – very relaxed and fun and everyone had a great time. It was cold but there was no rain and we ended up getting some great outdoor photos. We were so lucky to be given some advice on where to have them taken and they turned out absolutely great.’’

Leggett attended engagements on Saturday in his capacity as mayor, including the opening of Billy Graham’s boxing academy in Cannons Creek. A honeymoon away would have to wait a week, he said, but he and Emily were looking forward to some time out.

Hitched: Nick Leggett and his wife Emily at Hongoeka Bay last Friday afternoon.
