Tawa rules world of bar­ber­shop

Four young men who took up bar­ber­shop singing at Tawa Col­lege in 2002 have won the gold medal in the 2014 In­ter­na­tional Bar­ber­shop Har­mony So­ci­ety com­pe­ti­tion in Las Ve­gas.

Matt Gif­ford, bass, Jeff and Will Hunkin, tenor and bari­tone, and Maselusa Washburn, lead, en­tered the New Zealand Sec­ondary Schools Young Men In Har­mony com­pe­ti­tion in 2002, and won gold. They have thrilled au­di­ences ever since with their acapella har­monies.

They won the 2006 world cham­pi­onship un­der- 25 di­vi­sion in In­di­anapo­lis.

In their win­ning per­for­mance in Las Ve­gas, they sang Po Ata­rau/ Now is the Hour, and were the first group in the com­pe­ti­tion’s his­tory to sing in a lan­guage other than English.
