Council shines a light on education initiative
Porirua City Council is supporting the Shine education initiative.
In a report to the council’s Te Komiti last week, it was agreed to support the initiative – established in 2013 as a community-based strategic alliance to improve education for young people in Porirua – through leadership, support and advocacy.
The council will help with data collection and analysis. There are no costs involved, although there will be demands on council officers’ time.
Councillor Ken Douglas said the Shine initiative was a strong investment in the future of young people in the city.
Meanwhile Douglas has asked for a report on what tolling Transmission Gully will mean for Porirua City Council.
‘‘There needs to be a discussion on what this could do for State Highway 1 and our city,’’ he said.
‘‘The argument for tolling is about a monopoly situation, but we need to have a good understanding about the economic issues.’’
