The academic viewpoint

Kapi-Mana News - - ELECTION 2014 -

The Green Party’s housing spokeswoman, Holly Walker, was a Rhodes scholar to Oxford University, where she studied the consequences of economic inequality, including housing deprivation.

‘‘There is a lot of evidence that if you can get the housing policy right you can do a huge amount to mitigate the effects of child poverty and turn things around,’’ she said.

Home was where children spent the largest amount of their time, but if it made them sick and they moved around and changed schools frequently, the effect on their education was severe, Walker said.

There was definitely a housing crisis in the Wellington region, as well as the country as a whole,’’ she said.
