A drug grower was surprised in the nude when police raided his home in Titahi Bay.
Cannabis worth tens of thousands of dollars was removed from the house in Herewini St last Tuesday, along with pipes, growing equipment and an air gun.
A 38-year-old man was arrested and charged with cannabis possession. He will appear in Porirua District Court.
The man was an IT worker who was renting the house.
He had used a blacked-out bedroom to grow cannabis plants, and also had dried cannabis and cannabis oil in the house, Detective Sergeant Kelvyn Parry of Porirua said.
Six mature plants and 20 seedlings were seized.
Police surprised the man, who had been sleeping, when they raided his house at 10.15am.
‘‘He was nude, and in complete shock and surprise.’’
The ‘‘stench’’ of cannabis hit police at the bottom of the driveway, Parry said.
It was likely that the man had been growing cannabis for some time.
It took until 3.30pm to remove all the drugs and paraphernalia, which filled a police car and trailer. The man’s arrest led to another raid of a nearby Takapuwahia house, in Ngatitoa St.
Police said ‘‘ items of interest’’ were found at the address.
