The Hurricanes’ apprentice programme is paving the way for young rugby players in the region, with two Hawke’s Bay talents recently signing with the Super Rugby team through to 2017.

Lock Geoff Cridge, 19, has signed as a full squad member, and No 8 Hugh Renton, 18, will be part of the club’s wider training group in 2015.

Both were part of a 15-man apprentice programme introduced by the Hurricanes this year.

Cridge said he couldn’t be more excited to take up the opportunity with the Hurricanes.

‘‘I got a really good insight into the Hurricanes environment earlier this year through their apprentice programme, and can’t wait to move to Wellington to become part of the group,’’ he said.

During the programme, players spent a week training at the Super team’s Wellington base.
