Titahi Bay Surf Life Saving Club’s Nick Mulcahy and Peter Jones are up for national awards this Saturday.

The pair have been nominated in the lifeguard and volunteer categories respectively, at the Surf Life Saving New Zealand Awards of Excellence evening, to be held in Wellington.

The patron of Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, will present the awards. Mulcahy is one of nine lifeguards from around New Zealand up for lifeguard of the year, and Jones – who organises much of the junior section of the Titahi Bay club – will vie with eight others for the volunteer award.

A rescue carried out by the Titahi Bay lifeguards in March, in which two teenage kayakers were getting blown towards rocks in high winds, has also been nominated for the rescue of the year award.
