Whaitiri re­tains seat

Labour’s Meka Whaitiri re­turned to Par­lia­ment after re­tain­ing the Maori seat of Ikaroa-Rawhiti, which cov­ers the lower North Is­land.

Whaitiri was first elected in a by-elec­tion in June last year, after the death of long-serv­ing MP Parekura Horo­mia.

Whaitiri, 49, beat In­ter­net Mana’s Te Ha­mua Nikora by 4288 votes. To­tal votes counted were 18,820, about 600 than was cast in 2011.

Ikaroa Rawhiti was es­tab­lished in 1999, cov­er­ing the area of six gen­eral elec­torates from East Coast to Hutt South.
