Whaitiri retains seat
Labour’s Meka Whaitiri returned to Parliament after retaining the Maori seat of Ikaroa-Rawhiti, which covers the lower North Island.
Whaitiri was first elected in a by-election in June last year, after the death of long-serving MP Parekura Horomia.
Whaitiri, 49, beat Internet Mana’s Te Hamua Nikora by 4288 votes. Total votes counted were 18,820, about 600 than was cast in 2011.
Ikaroa Rawhiti was established in 1999, covering the area of six general electorates from East Coast to Hutt South.
