Stella wants to see MegaCentre grow
Stella Vine says supporting innovation should be compulsory among Porirua retailers.
The owner of Stella Creations will celebrate 10 years in business in December. She is at her third premises, having started with a shop under the Canopies in Porirua’s CBD, before moving into North City Shopping Centre last year.
Stella Creations has been next to Briscoes in the MegaCentre since April.
‘‘We supported the Canopies as long as we could, but we had to go,’’ she said.
‘‘ The landlord here [ at the MegaCentre] is great and we’re really happy.’’
Behind the Stella Creations shop is a huge room that Vine would love to sub-lease to local artists, craftspeople and carvers.
‘‘I’ve been thinking that there is an opportunity here,’’ she said.
‘‘As a retailer, it’s easy to sit back and worry about your own stuff, but you need to be innovative as well, when the chances come up.
‘‘If all the little retailers in Porirua work more closely together, we can help put Porirua on the map.’’
Vine said local artists having a dedicated space to sell their wares could enhance the MegaCentre, because the area did not have a dedicated gift store-type shop.
‘‘What I’m seeing is gifts made by local people that have a real Porirua and New Zealand feel,’’ she said.
‘‘It could be like a market or a co-op, in one place. How good would that be?’’
Vine said there had already been interest and she hoped to have an official opening for the space shortly.
