The num­ber of votes cast in the 2014 elec­tion, ex­clud­ing spe­cial votes, was 2,367,152 and 77.04 per cent of those who were el­i­gi­ble turned out to vote. About 30 per cent of those who voted did so in ad­vance. In 2011, the voter turnout was only 74.21 per cent, the low­est for more than two decades. In 2008, when Na­tional ended Labour’s nine years in Gov­ern­ment, the voter turnout was 79.46 per cent.
