Karaoke for a cause

A karaoke com­pe­ti­tion will take place in Can­nons Creek on Oc­to­ber 8 in support of Men­tal Health Aware­ness Week.

The pub­lic com­pe­ti­tion is open to ev­ery­one and be­gins at 11am at Free­dom House, 174 Bed­ford St.

The day of fes­tiv­i­ties, hosted by Te Waka Whaiora Trust, be­gins at 10am with a karakia.

Kai will be served at noon, be­fore karaoke re­sumes at 1.15pm.

The af­ter­noon will close with a kapa haka per­for­mance by Te Waka Trust and a karakia.

Co-or­gan­iser Dale Mackey said there was an open invitation to the pub­lic and lo­cal or­gan­i­sa­tions to at­tend and en­joy danc­ing, singing and food.

The karaoke com­pe­ti­tion has be­come an an­nual event, but Mackey said there was a chance this could be the last time the event was held be­cause of fund­ing cuts.
