A Whitby house painter is taking a break from work to focus on a different type of painting.

Artist Tom Wallace, 24, was the winner of the Unleash Art Competition, sponsored by North City Shopping Centre.

His work features all the different types of people who visit the centre.

Wallace said he prepared for the piece by spending a day sketching the people he saw in the centre and his artwork represents that.

‘‘I was trying to get a sense of community that the mall creates,’’ he said.

The labourer and house painter took leave from his job to paint the work, which features on a wall in the level 2 foyer.

He said the $2500 prize would cover the time he’d spent on the work.

The win came after the top 10 works were displayed in the centre during the school holidays.

‘‘I thought I had a chance, but didn’t think I’d actually win,’’ Wallace said.

Wallace started painting as a child and graduated with a graphic design degree from Massey University two years ago.
